Comics Academy for youth ages 8 to 13
Comics Academy is an ongoing series of workshops, where your child will learn and perfect the basics of comic creation.
Students will be taught how to develop their own characters, write engaging stories and create artwork that supports their narrative.
This workshop series is an open space where students are encouraged to participate, interact with their peers, ask questions and explore their creativity.
Each session will contain formal group instruction as well as learner directed guidance as it pertains to the story a student is working on.
Participants are allowed to work at their own pace while all the techniques of comic book production are discussed, including:
- Outlining a story and scriptwriting
- Thumbnailing
- Lettering
- Pencilling
- Inking
- Colouring
Session dates & times
All classes run from 2:00pm to 4:00pm.

Supply list
In this class we work in traditional drawing methods. Your child should attend each session with the following materials:
- Regular HB pencil with a pencil sharpener or a mechanical pencil with extra leads
- White eraser or a kneaded eraser
- Ruler
- Twin tip black sharpie and a chisel tip black sharpie
- Coloured pencils
Important note
- Please provide your child with a nut-free snack and a water bottle.
About the instructor
This course is taught by Kelvin Nyeusi-Mawazo who is the founder of Black Sun Comics.
Kelvin has done workshops and given talks with The Durham Black Educators Network, Eastview Boys and Girls Club, York Region District School Board, Strides Toronto, The Ontario Trillium Foundation & The Guelph Black History Society
